Welcome

CHALLENGES relating to the earth's resources, environments, and cultures are at the forefront of global concern—and likely to be there long into the future. The Geology and Geography Department offers you the opportunity to understand the complexities of natural and human environments and their relevance to a multitude of contemporary human and environmental issues.

Earth scientists study the processes and causes of environmental changes, and explore their consequences. The Geologist reads the record of the earth's long history by studying its structure and composition and then determines how it came to be that way. Geologists use physical, chemical, and biological tools and methods. The Geographer seeks to comprehend natural and human patterns as they vary over geographic space, the interaction between humans and their natural environments, and the methods—such as mapping and Geographic Information Systems (GIS)—that assist in such understanding.

The Geology and Geography Department offers a Professional Geology Major Sequence, General Geology Major Sequence, Earth Science Major, Geography Major, Environmental Studies Major, and Urban Studies Major.

The Department of Geology and Geography seeks a geologist to teach part time during the 2009-2010 academic year.

Teaching units include one section of GEOL 110: Physical and Environmental Geology and one section of GEOL 112: History of the Earth for the fall semester (August 24 - December 17) and one section of GEOL 110 during the spring semester (January 11 - May 6). Preference will be given to applicants with the Ph.D. or ABD, and who have teaching experience.
